Legal Experience

  • Law Clerk for the U.S. Attorney's Office in Omaha, Nebraska, 1997-1998. Authored legal briefs for federal civil and criminal courts, and helped prosecute cases under the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA).
  • Assistant County Attorney, Lamar County, Texas, 1998-2000. Served as Chief Misdemeanor Prosecutor and assisted with trying felony criminal cases.   
  • Assistant District Attorney, Victoria County, 2000-2001. As Chief of the Misdemeanor Section, was responsible for prosecuting misdemeanor, juvenile, and hot check cases, as well as supervising other misdemeanor prosecutors.
  • Assistant District Attorney, Victoria County, 2001-2003. Narcotics prosecutor in charge of prosecuting felony drug and intoxication-related crimes, along with overseeing seizures and forfeitures from drug cases.
  • Assistant District Attorney, Victoria County, 2003. Felony prosecutor responsible for murder and capital murder cases. Achieved six jury convictions in six murder cases in a six-month period, and five convictions in five jury trials for indecency/aggravated sexual assault of a child crimes.
  • First Assistant District Attorney, Victoria County, 2003-2004. Coordinated prosecution of criminal and civil cases while also supervising seven prosecutors.
  • Operated his own law office in Victoria, 2004-2006. Practiced civil, criminal, family, federal, and juvenile law in Victoria and surrounding counties.
  • Victoria County District Attorney, 2007-Present:
  • Reorganized the D.A.’s Office to focus on effectively prosecuting and trying criminal cases.
  • Revised office policies to better assist crime victims and reduce intoxication-related crimes.
  • Since 2007, the D.A.’s Office has filed over 7,000 felony cases and nearly 20,000 misdemeanor cases.
  • Some 100 felony offenders have been sentenced to life in prison or the equivalent.
  • The D.A.’s Office tries felony cases at a rate nearly triple the state average while maintaining an overall conviction rate that exceeds the state average.
  • The office has a jury trial conviction rate in crimes against children cases of over 3.5 times the state rate.
  • Used money seized from criminals to fund a professional study of the Victoria Regional Juvenile Justice Center as part of an initiative to save taxpayers money and improve safety for juveniles at the Justice Center.
  • Several members of the D.A.’s Office have been honored for their service to crime victims.
  • As a prosecutor, has personally tried over 100 criminal cases (including 37 murder or attempted murder cases, 19 manslaughter or intoxication felonies, over 40 gang-related felony cases, 16 felony crimes against children, and 17 felony drug cases) with a felony trial conviction rate of over 90%. This includes 28 sentences of life in prison or the equivalent, and nearly 50 sentences of 25 years or more.
  • Chosen by the Texas District & County Attorneys Association (TDCAA) to serve as its Board Member representing the 45 County Attorneys, District Attorneys, and Criminal District Attorneys from Edna to Laredo and all counties South in Region 4.
