Military Service

  • Completed the U.S. Army's elite Ranger school in 1981 and graduated from the U.S. Army Airborne School in 1982 while a cadet at Texas A&M University.
  • Commissioned into the S. Army Infantry as a Second Lieutenant in 1982.
  • Air Assault Infantry Platoon Leader in the 101st Airborne Division, 1983-1984. Coordinated training and tactical deployment of 45 soldiers. Awarded the Army Achievement Medal, the Expert Infantry Badge, and the Army Service Ribbon.
  • Promoted to First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army in 1984.
  • Air Assault Anti-Tank Company Executive Officer, 101st Airborne Division, 1984-1985. Responsible for logistical support of 90 soldiers, along with 40 vehicles and $15,000,000 in equipment.
  • Air Assault School Operations Officer, 1985-1986. Coordinated and conducted training in air assault operations including infiltration, extraction, and re-supply techniques for some 10,000 soldiers each year.
  • Infantry Battalion Scout Platoon Leader, 1986-1987. Led air assault scouts on Corps-level and Division-level infiltration operations, and was chosen to represent the 101st Airborne in the “Best Ranger Competition”. Awarded the Army Commendation Medal.
  • Promoted to Captain in the S. Army in 1987.
  • Senior Ranger Instructor, 6th Ranger Training Battalion, 1987-1989. Responsible for leadership and tactical training of around 500 Army Rangers per year in jungle/swamp environments.
  • Ranger Training Company Commander, 1989-1990. Coordinated and conducted training for some 1,000 Army Rangers each year. Awarded the Army Commendation Medal and Senior Parachutist Badge.
  • Long Range Surveillance Detachment Commander, South Korea, 1990-1991. Responsible for carrying out the infiltration of paratroopers behind enemy lines for the 2nd Army Infantry Division. Awarded the Overseas Ribbon.
  • Headquarters Company Commander, South Korea, 1991-1992. Responsible for over 300 soldiers, more than $30,000,000 in equipment, and maintaining a fleet of around 60 vehicles. Awarded the Army Achievement Medal twice, and the Army Meritorious Service Medal. Also received the National Defense Service Medal and Overseas Ribbon.
  • Senior Army ROTC Instructor and Operations Officer, Notre Dame University, 1992-1994. Trained hundreds of cadets, leading them to success in regional and national ROTC competitions. Awarded the Army Achievement Medal and the Army Meritorious Service Medal.
  • Promoted to Major upon entering the U.S. Army Reserves in 1994.
