People affected by chronic conditions—such as diabetes, heart disease, asthma, high blood pressure, or kidney disease—may encounter challenges during disasters. Disasters and emergencies can disrupt access to essential services like medications, medical supplies, electricity, clean water, and routine medical care.
Planning is critical for protecting people with chronic illnesses. This includes storing additional medications properly, knowing the correct storage methods, keeping medical information readily available, and preparing for medical emergencies. Community planning and public health initiatives are crucial in safeguarding vulnerable populations during a disaster.
